Everything you need to know about instantlessonplan.ai
Pro tip — Better inputs, better lessons
The quality of your lesson plan starts with you.
The quality of generated lesson plans is directly influenced by the information you provide. More specific inputs help create more targeted and classroom-ready lessons. Think of it like briefing a substitute teacher — the more context you give, the better the result.
For best results, include:
A clear, measurable learning objective (e.g. "Students will be able to identify the causes of WWI")
Relevant state standards (select your state, framework, and strand)
Grade level and subject area
Any required accommodations (ELL, IEP, differentiation needs)
Specific topics, skills, or concepts to emphasize

Lesson generation
Which state standards are supported?
We support Common Core State Standards (CCSS), Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), National Council for Social Studies (NCSS), and state-specific frameworks. Select your state, framework, and strand in the Standards section of the generator. You can also enter custom standard codes directly.
Can I edit the generated lesson?
Yes — every section of the generated lesson is fully editable inline. Click the Edit button on any section to modify the text directly. You can also use the Rewrite button to regenerate a specific section with additional instructions — without regenerating the entire lesson.
How long does generation take?
Most lesson plans generate in 5–15 seconds. More complex lessons with accommodations, multiple standards, and longer durations may take slightly longer. Section rewrites are faster — typically 3–7 seconds.
What subjects and grade levels are supported?
All subjects and grade levels from Kindergarten through Grade 12 are supported, including Advanced Placement courses. The tool is designed by educators with experience across multiple disciplines — including math, ELA, science, social studies, history, visual arts, PE, and music.
How do IEP Accommodations work?
Toggle the Accommodations section in the generator and select any applicable accommodations from 7 categories — including Presentation, Response, Setting, Scheduling, Language Support, Behavioral, and Technology. You can also add custom accommodations. The AI generates a dedicated Accommodations section at the bottom of the lesson with specific, practical strategies for each selected accommodation. You can regenerate just the accommodations section if you add or change selections after the initial generation.
What lesson structures are available?
You can include any combination of: Warm-up, Direct instruction, Guided practice, Group instruction, Independent practice, and Exit ticket. Each section has its own time allocation (5–20 minute increments) and the total is tracked against your lesson duration so you always stay on time.
Assessments (Pro)
What types of assessments can I generate?
Pro users can generate four types of assessments aligned to the lesson objective and standards:
Exit ticket — 3–5 quick questions for end-of-class comprehension checks
Quiz — 10–15 questions for formative assessment
Unit test — 20–30 questions for summative assessment
Rubric — criteria-based rubric with performance level descriptors
Are assessments saved with the lesson?
Yes — when you save a lesson, any generated assessments are saved alongside it. When you reopen a saved lesson from your library, all previously generated assessments are restored so you can switch between them without regenerating.
Can I include an answer key?
Yes — choose from three answer key options: Included (answers shown inline with correct answers highlighted), Separate (answer key at the bottom of the assessment), or None (student-facing version only). Short answer questions always include a sample answer when an answer key is selected.
Saving & exporting
What export formats are available?
All users can export lessons as PDF, Word (.docx), or use the Print button for a clean print-ready version. Google Docs export is coming soon. Assessment export to PDF is available for Pro users.
Where are my saved lessons stored?
Saved lessons are stored securely in your account and accessible from the Saved lessons page. Free users can view saved lessons in read-only mode. Pro users can open saved lessons directly in the editor to make changes, regenerate sections, and update assessments.
Can I set defaults so I don't have to re-enter my subject and grade every time?
Yes — go to My Account → Lesson defaults to set your default subject, grade, duration, instructional approach, state standards, and lesson structure. These pre-fill the generator every time you open it and are saved to your account so they work across devices.
